How to write a software engineer resume

Lead with impact, not a list of technologies

Hiring managers at tech companies read dozens of resumes per role. The ones that get callbacks lead every bullet with a result, not a task. "Reduced load time by 60%" outperforms "Responsible for frontend performance" every time. Format: action verb + what you did + measurable result.

Structure your skills section for ATS and humans

Most companies run resumes through ATS before a human sees them. Include technologies named in the job posting in your skills section. Group them by category: languages, frameworks, databases, infrastructure. 10 focused skills beat 30 scattered ones — only list what you can discuss in depth.

Make the profile section earn its place

The profile at the top is read first. Keep it to 2–3 sentences. State your years of experience, your specialty (backend, full-stack, mobile), and one concrete achievement that signals your level. Skip "passionate developer" — it adds no signal.

Key tips

Lead every bullet with a strong verb: Built, Reduced, Led, Migrated, Shipped
Quantify everything: percentages, response times, user counts, uptime, revenue
Skills section: list technologies from the job posting, grouped by type
Include GitHub or portfolio link directly in the header
One page for under 10 years of experience

Frequently asked questions

Should I list every technology I know?

No. List 8–12 technologies you can speak to in depth. Listing everything signals you're not focused — employers want relevant depth, not breadth.

Do I need a cover letter as a software engineer?

For most engineering roles a strong resume matters more. A short, specific cover letter helps for smaller companies or culture-focused roles.

How far back should work experience go?

8–10 years is enough. Earlier roles add little signal. Use that space for recent measurable impact instead.

Do I need a computer science degree to get past resume screening?

No — shipped work outranks credentials at most companies. If you are self-taught or came through a bootcamp, lead with a strong experience or projects section and move education to the bottom. A degree still helps at some large firms and for visa-sponsored roles, so include it if you have one, but never lead with it after your first job.

What if all my code is in private repositories?

Describe outcomes instead of linking code: scale, performance numbers, and the problems you solved carry the same signal. If you want a public artifact, extract one small tool or write-up you are allowed to share — one polished repo with a clear README beats ten abandoned ones. Recruiters check pinned repos, not commit counts.
