How to write an accountant resume

Lead with your qualification and a headline number

State your professional qualification (ACA, ACCA, CIMA) in the profile or even the job title line. Then give one strong metric: close cycle time reduced, audit finding record, or the size of portfolio you manage. Hiring managers in finance expect precision.

Show ownership, not just participation

Accountancy roles differ by level in the degree of ownership. "Assisted with" is weak. "Managed statutory audit for 4 group entities" is strong. Specify the turnover, headcount, or transaction volume to give context to every claim.

Format for both ATS and human readers

Use standard section headings: Profile, Experience, Qualifications, Skills, Education. Avoid tables or columns — they confuse applicant tracking systems. List your qualification prominently since many roles filter on ACA, ACCA, or CIMA.

Key tips

State professional qualification (ACA, ACCA, CIMA) in profile or title line
Quantify scope: turnover managed, entities covered, close cycle times
Use standard headings — avoid tables or text boxes
Highlight compliance track record: zero audit findings, VAT reviews, IFRS adoption
Include relevant software: SAP, Xero, Sage, Excel (advanced)

Frequently asked questions

Should I include my part-qualified status if I haven't finished the exams?

Yes — note the stage you're at: "Part-qualified ACCA (P2 completed)" is more useful than listing it as a skill. Include expected completion date if you're actively studying.

How do I present contract or interim accountancy work?

List each contract as a separate role, or group short placements under a "Freelance / Contract Accountant" heading with the date range. Include the client type and key deliverable for each.

How long should an accountant resume be?

Two pages for qualified accountants with more than 4 years' experience. One page for part-qualified or early-career roles. Never pad — every line should earn its place.
