How to write a business analyst resume

Quantify the scope of every project

State the project budget, system scale, or number of stakeholders involved. "Led requirements for £8M system replacement" says more than "worked on a large IT project." BA resumes that lack numbers feel vague regardless of the actual work done.

Show the before and after

The best BA bullets describe a problem, the analysis you did, and the measurable improvement. Process handling time reduced, error rates cut, cost savings identified. Pair methodology (BPMN, user stories, BDD) with a concrete result.

Tailor your methodology language to the role

If the job is Agile, lead with user stories, sprint ceremonies, and backlog grooming. If it's traditional waterfall delivery, lead with requirements documentation, traceability matrices, and sign-off processes. Read the job description carefully.

Key tips

State project investment or system scale for each major project
Pair methodology with outcome: "BPMN mapping → 30% handling time reduction"
Include both Agile (user stories, BDD) and waterfall (functional specs) if applicable
List tools: Jira, Confluence, Visio, SQL, Miro
Mention stakeholder count and seniority level for key projects

Frequently asked questions

Should I include technical skills like SQL on a BA resume?

Yes if you use SQL for data analysis or validation. Even basic querying skill is valued. Don't overstate it — "SQL for data analysis" is safer than "SQL" alone if you're not running complex queries.

How do I show the difference between junior and senior BA experience?

Senior BAs own the requirements process: they facilitate workshops, manage scope, and make calls. Junior BAs support it. Show progression in your bullets: from documenting requirements to defining acceptance criteria to managing the full requirements lifecycle independently.

Is a business analysis certification worth mentioning?

BCS BA Diploma, CBAP, or IIBA certifications are worth listing — they signal professional commitment. For Agile roles, a Scrum Product Owner or SAFe certification is also recognized. List under a Certifications section.
